Crypto Staking APY & Compound Interest Calculator
Calculate exact daily, monthly, and annual compounding staking rewards across major Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchains with customizable validator commission fees.
How Proof-of-Stake (PoS) Staking Generates Yield
In modern Proof-of-Stake blockchains (like Ethereum, Solana, and Cardano), staking replaces energy-intensive Proof-of-Work mining. Rather than solving computational puzzles with expensive graphics cards or ASICs, network participants lock up native cryptocurrency tokens to secure the consensus mechanism.
Validators are selected algorithmically to propose and attest to new blocks of transactions in proportion to their total delegated stake. In exchange for committing capital and maintaining 24/7 server uptime, validators receive protocol-level rewards consisting of:
- Newly Minted Block Subsidies: Algorithmic protocol emissions designed to reward security contributors.
- Priority Transaction Gas Fees: Fees paid by network users to have their transactions included in blocks.
- Maximal Extractable Value (MEV): Additional arbitrage and liquidation tips captured by block proposers.
The Compounding Formula Explained
Our calculator computes compounding returns using the standard continuous compound interest equation:
A = P × (1 + r / n)(n × t)
Where:
A= Final total cryptocurrency token balance after staking.P= Principal starting amount of tokens staked.r= Net Annual Percentage Yield (APY) expressed as a decimal, calculated asNominal APY × (1 - Validator Commission).n= Compounding frequency per year (365 for daily auto-restaking; 1 for annual distribution).t= Total staking duration in years.
Critical Risks of Staking: What Every Investor Must Know
⚠️ Staking is Not Free Money: While staking yields resemble traditional high-yield savings accounts or dividend stocks, Proof-of-Stake introduces unique cryptographic risks:
- Slashing Penalties: If the validator node you delegate to acts maliciously (e.g., attempts a double-signing attack) or suffers extended offline downtime, the blockchain protocol may automatically confiscate a portion of the delegated stake as a penalty. Always choose reputable validators with proven track records and multi-region redundancy.
- Unbonding & Lockup Periods: Most PoS networks enforce an "unbonding period" during which you cannot move or trade your tokens after initiating a withdrawal (e.g., ~21 days on Cosmos, ~28 days on Polkadot, and dynamic queue wait times on Ethereum). If market prices crash during the unbonding window, you cannot exit your position immediately.
- Smart Contract & Liquid Staking Risks: Liquid staking protocols (like Lido, Rocket Pool, or Jito) issue derivative liquid tokens (e.g., stETH, JitoSOL) representing staked assets. If the underlying smart contract suffers an exploit, the derivative token can de-peg from the underlying collateral.
Non-Custodial Staking vs Centralized Exchange Staking
Staking directly through a centralized exchange (CEX) like Coinbase or Binance is convenient, but you pay a massive penalty: centralized exchanges typically take a 20% to 35% commission cut off your earned rewards and hold your private keys.
The gold standard is Native Non-Custodial Staking using a secure hardware wallet (like Ledger or Trezor) paired with open-source software interfaces (like Guarda Wallet or Keplr). Your assets never leave your cryptographic custody, and you retain 100% of your earned protocol yield.
